Umbrella vs Limited Company — Which Pays More?

Updated July 2026 HMRC 2026/27 rates Plain English

Last updated: 26 July 2026

The main difference between umbrella and limited company contracting is control, tax efficiency, and administration. A limited company typically pays more take-home pay (especially at higher day rates) but requires more admin. An umbrella company handles all payroll for you but takes a margin and offers less flexibility.

When to Choose Each Option

Choose umbrella if: you are just starting contracting, your contract is inside IR35, your contract is short (under 6 months), or you want zero admin and no accountant fees. Umbrella companies also protect you from HMRC compliance risk — they handle all PAYE obligations.

Choose limited company if: your contract is outside IR35 and confirmed as such by a Status Determination Statement, you expect to earn above £50,000/year through contracting, you plan to contract for more than 12 months, or you want to retain profits in the company and draw them at the most tax-efficient time.

The IR35 Factor

IR35 is the single most important factor in this decision. If your contract is inside IR35, operating through a limited company offers no tax advantage — you must pay the same PAYE as an employee. In this case an umbrella company is simpler and equally tax-efficient. Only outside-IR35 contractors see a meaningful take-home benefit from a limited company structure.
