Converting Between Hourly Rate and Annual Salary

To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours, then by 52 weeks. For example, £15/hour at 37.5 hours/week equals £29,250/year.

Converting annual salary to hourly rate

To go the other way, divide your annual salary by 52 weeks, then by your weekly contracted hours. A £35,000 salary at 37.5 hours/week works out to approximately £17.95/hour.

Why this matters when comparing job offers

Some UK jobs are advertised by hourly rate, others by annual salary — converting between the two makes it much easier to compare offers fairly, especially when weekly hours differ between roles.

An hourly rate calculator converts your hourly wage into an equivalent annual salary, and can also work the other way — converting an annual salary into an hourly rate. It's useful for comparing job offers with different pay structures or estimating freelance hourly rates.

Multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours, then by 52 weeks. For example, £15/hour at 37.5 hours/week equals £29,250/year (15 x 37.5 x 52). Some calculations use 48 working weeks if you want to exclude typical holiday weeks.

The National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is reviewed annually by the UK government. Always check the current GOV.UK rates, as minimum wage rates increase each April and vary by age band (18-20, and under 18 have different rates).

Divide your annual salary by 52 weeks, then by your weekly contracted hours. For example, a £30,000 salary at 37.5 hours/week equals approximately £15.38/hour (30,000 / 52 / 37.5).

Hourly pay is most common in retail, hospitality, healthcare (nursing shifts), and part-time or flexible roles. Many full-time professional roles are quoted as an annual salary instead, though the underlying hourly equivalent is useful for comparing different job offers.
